Adhesives and Sealants

Epoxy-based or silicone-based, used for bonding composites and sealing joints.

Adhesives in Commercial Aviation

  1. Epoxy Adhesives Used for structural bonding (e.g., composite-to-metal or composite-to-composite bonding). High strength, excellent thermal and chemical resistance. Common brands: 3M Scotch-Weld, Henkel Loctite EA series.
  2. Acrylic Adhesives Used for bonding lightweight structures, panels, and interior applications. Fast curing and good impact resistance.
  3. Polyurethane Adhesives Used for bonding composite structures and plastics. Flexible, impact-resistant, and weatherproof.
  4. Cyanoacrylate Adhesives (Super Glue) Used for quick repairs and non-structural applications. Provides rapid bonding of small components.
  5. Phenolic Adhesives Used in honeycomb sandwich structures for aircraft interiors. Fire-resistant and heat-resistant.
  6. Silicone Adhesives Used for bonding and sealing electrical and avionics components. High temperature and moisture resistance.
  7. Film Adhesives Pre-applied adhesive films activated by heat and pressure. Used in composite bonding and metal bonding applications.

Sealants in Commercial Aviation

  1. Polysulfide Sealants Used in fuel tanks, windows, doors, and pressure seals. Highly resistant to fuel, oil, and hydraulic fluids. Example: PRC-Desoto (PPG PR-1422, PR-1440).
  2. Silicone Sealants Used for high-temperature and electrical insulation applications. Excellent flexibility and weather resistance.
  3. Polyurethane Sealants Used for general sealing applications, including cabin and cargo areas. Good adhesion and flexibility.
  4. Butyl Sealants Used for moisture-resistant applications such as aircraft windows and galleys.
  5. Epoxy-Based Sealants Used for structural sealing and reinforcement. High-strength bonding in fuselage and wing areas.
